Skyping without a computer

What is the easiest way to link Skype into your office phone system or office PBX? That is the question I posed to Paul Daut, IT Integration Specialist at US Robotics. US Robotics have all their support call centers set up to accept calls from Skype.

One way of course is...

...with Skype to PBX gateway adapters, such as Zipcom, Vosky, Spintronics, or Skype2PBX.

These gateways handle 4 Skype calls at a time and range in price from $2000 US to $3000 (including the required PC).

Paul's approach was different. Because he is an IT guy I expected a geeky solution. I was wowed with his solution. It did not even use a computer.

For each Call Center Paul sets up a Skype Account and buys a SkypeIn number. That SkypeIn number is then setup in Skype>Tools>Options to Call Forward to the Call Center. Brilliant.

At the time USRobotics was paying about 15 to 18 cents per minute to handle support calls in Europe. Using the above approach all calls are handled by SkypeOut and have a cost of 2 cents. So Paul was achieving a cost savings of better than 80 percent. Of course now with free SkypeOut calls in North America at least one USRobotics Call Center will be at 100 percent savings.

Nice. No capital cost. And no computer. Good going Paul and Skype!

100% Savings? They still need to purchase the SkypeIn number and pay for that. Further, the SkypeOut for free is only valid through the end of the year.

Further, what telecom services were they using that had such high rates? There are many alternatives to providing North American and European support services at a much lower cost, beating the price per minute for SkypeOut (1.7 Euro Cents/min). Seems more like some support services team did not have their telecoms cost under control, and went for a hack as oppossed to a professional solution.

SkypeIn calls are handled without a computer because it gets forwarded to the PBX. How are SkypeOut calls made without a computer?

Brilliant .... i dont think u need a High I.Q. to know that if u want to receive calls with out using a computer u'll have to forward your skype in number to your phone , the next question for the "Genius" is how he would make outgoing calls without EQO or an adaptor when the calls drops while on a support call & how he is going to figure out the customers caller id, if the customer is using skypeout to place the call

Hey Aswath!
Good to hear from you again. In this case I suppose USRobotics is only supporting the Skype user-base with incoming support calls to their traditional pbx-based call center.

Hey Muppet! Three times.
In Europe inter-country calls with traditional telecoms are expensive. And not everyone has the same CPU power between their ears like you do. (Grin)

The SkypeIn number does cost money. My guess is about 0.16 cents per call. In Canada we call that "mouse nuts". Too small to worry about.

They were only looking for this project to reduce cost by 80%. SkypeOut free to Christmas was a bouns.

Please hurry back, Regards, Bill

A cost per call is very different than the 100% cost-savings you ascerted in your original post. If only this blog would be a little more balanced, rather than gleefully dancing at every opportunity...

Hey Muppet!
Gleefully dancing is good for the soul. Better than a glum Muppet too. (Grin)
