SkypeOut now Free in North America

For the balance of 2006 SkypeOut will be free for users in Canada and the US to call others in Canada and the US.

Thank you Skype.

This feels like a marketing ploy. Free calls to landlines and mobile phones is likely to give Skype some needed visibility in this geographic corner of Skypeland. I hope Skype will back this move with some other complimentary moves because cost of long distance is not much of a driver in this market.

SkypeOut is not free to all US/Canadian users. Apparently if you are a subscriber of a Time Warner ISP (Road Runner, Brighthouse, etc.) you are not able to make SkypeOut calls for free and are told you need to purchase SkypeOut credits.

A thread on this topic has been started on the official Skype forums today, and it appears the problem is affecting quite a few people. This hurts Skype's credibility, and unless they fix this quickly it could be horrible for their North American reputation.

Thanks Josh! I am pretty sure you will get what everyone gets. I guess Skype had a great idea and never bother to test it.

I have had dozens of people contact me about how excited they were about this new service. Maybe skype finally hit a hot button in America.
