Microsoft offers Beta of Skype Wrapper for .NET Starter Kit

April 20, 2006 12:46 PM

Topics:

Microsoft announced free "Express Editions" of programming tools, each with a component for talking with and controlling the Skype client through the Skype API.

The Beta of the Skype Wrapper for .NET Starter Kit is a managed code wrapper with samples that enables to programmatically connect and consume Skype services from Visual Basic, Visual C#, Visual J#, or Visual C++ Express.

Skype has their own Skype ActiveX Tools containing the Skype4COM library. Maybe we can dig up a comparison of the two companies' respective wrappers.

I'm eager to see mashups of Skype with Microsoft's Dancing4Fun demo and Lego Mindstorms: dance dance baby with your friends and robots over the Internet. Maybe at their Made In Express contest ($10,000 prize).

There was a Delphi wrapper very early on. I think even before any of the ActiveX controls.

I think Skype could help developers here by assembling native language wrappers for most of the compiled languages; C++, C#, Delphi/Object Pascal. On top of this they could then provide, components, wrappers and sample code for the ActiveX controls in all the non -compiled languages. Java, VB, PHP, Python, Ruby, perl, etc.

Obviously they don't have to do this all themselves. But they can help considerably by supporting 3rd party efforts to do this. Both with real support for the developers and maintaining a directory.

Another thought. Do you think somebody in MS language development involved in this will talk to somebody in MSN Messenger development and ask them "Why hasn't Messenger got an easy to use API like Skype?" And "MSN is being beaten left, right and center by Skype. Why don't you guys get it?"

Everything I've heard second and third-hand about the MSN Messenger and Messenger Live people is that they all about the software architecture now. I'm sure they have APIs in the works.

Interesting, should be good for developers to keep an eye on.

We've developed a VUI (voice user interface) for Skype using the .NET framework and the Skype COM API (Skype4COM). It allows you to "use your voice to control Skype". You can use speech to make calls, dial SkypeOut numbers, search your call logs and voicemail. More planned in the future.
