Skype Products Looking for Retailers

Lots of products emerging for Skype at CES. The Skype brand has captured real interest with Asian suppliers who are working up all sorts of solutions.. Here are just a few pictures. Some are prototypes, some are ready to go. The real news is the manufacturers see Skype creating a profitable new market. In contrast to one year ago where there weren't enough products to create a product range for Skype enabled solutions, today that's possible. A huge "education" job will still be required at retail. I think I talked to everyone that had a Skype product for sale. It was a lot of walking and two different venues. Next year, look to Skype to provide a central showcase.

The biggest challenge for all these manufacturers integrating their products with Skype is creating their own seemless software. While the phones look good most of them don't have the sophisticated software to provide a delightful experience. For the most part these solutions are not yet Skype Certified. I didn't meet one OEM that said... we certify our products to this point... and these are the additional steps you will have to complete to complete certification. More education is required here too.

Here's a nice design idea from Iqua. It's a Smart Badge that lets you take your Skype calls while walking around. Similarly you can use it with your cellphone.

Another USB phone for Skype. The benefits of this one. Very lightweight. The problem will many of them will be the software. That's worth a separate discussion.

This device plugs into your USB providing a controller for your standard skype headset. Now you can answer your calls without using the computer keyboard. Added convenience.

I saw at least four or five more phones and devices for use with Skype.

Stuart, can you find out a product code or manufacturer for the Smart Dongle that has Skype already loaded. I'll be interested in buying one. Is there a website where it can be ordered?
