Let me think... I buy one of these, walk into a Starbucks and I feel the need to call Europe (let's say the UK for 40 minutes) so I log into the T-Mobile system and buy a one day pass for $9.99 (ugly experience on one of these devices). Then I use my Vonage account to make the call (at a rate of $0.04 per minute). Hopefully this all worked -- let's assume it did. My average minute rate will be $0.29 per minute.
Now of course I'm assuming that the daily pass isn't used for web surfing on a computer to alleviate the cost. Duh! Am I missing something here?
Why not walk in with your mobile call a 1-800 number to use a calling card at $0.02 per minute. Add the cost of your mobile minutes to access the 1-800 (say $0.05 per minute) and your cost per minute for the same call is $0.07 per minute plus the whole thing is a lot easier.
I travel a lot. I've used everything... Pocket PC + Skype, Soft SIP phones on my laptop, direct international GSM calls (not as expensive as you think with the right plan). Believe me, the best and cheapest method by a long, long way is mobile + calling card. Always works, it's fast reliable and cheap.
I know of what speak here. I was the founder of FatPort (fatport.com) and Mobitus (mobitus.com). This is a really badly positioned product.

Yep , But if you go for comunity mesh wifi networks like those from http://freenetworks.org and for france http://wireless-fr.org , then you will be able to use those sip mobiles phones as long as your provider has asked for opening the network to their SIP proxy by default, which is what is done by default when you install http://wifidog.org

I came across this post while searching for information on Fatport. Having just come from a cafe where, rather than pay Fatport, I just used the neighbour's free wifi, Sean's post is poignantly hilarious.
If you're already paying for Vonage at home, this is no worse than buying a good cordless phone that won't interfere with your local 2.4GHz spectrum.
