Verosee - Skype's Groove Killer?

1000 beta testers wanted! Are you using Skype in your business? Are you wanting you combine your Skyping with a collaborative workspace tool? If you are happy trying a highly developed beta product then this is an early opportunity to get in the front door and build the future. Sign up at Verosee and DOWNLOAD without waiting here.

How would I describe Verosee and my initial experience? It's like Groove but with Skype inside. It's frankly the best wrapper for Skype yet released. It's also the best demonstration of what Skype has to offer when integrated into collaborative work platforms. What intrigues me the most? It's a potential Groove killer, developed by a smart team in Argentina under the radar of both Skype and I'm sure all the major players. A little imagination and one can see a number of strategic opportunities developing for Verosee. So join in and test with me.

Veroseefullscreen.pngWhat’s it look like? It’s a workspace. You can live in it and switch between workspace projects while managing all your Skype interactions at the same time. It’s effective for conference calls and sharing presentations amongst small groups.

What does Verosee promise? 10 related ones in my book.
1. Enhanced workplace and personal productivity
2. Multimedia call center
3. Multiple workspaces and Project workgroup optiions. Capable of managing document flow for example.
4. Group management from administrator to guest
5. Presence - new angles on managing Skype presence; location, workspace, document open etc.
6. Security architecture – Read their security document. Well thought out. Have to download to access it.
7. Now Windows, it will be cross-platform - java based
8. File synchronization (acts like a wiki for Word docs.) Versioning.
9. Desktop sharing – same document at the same time
10. Features to come include calendar, discussion, browser, photos etc.

Download Verosee here. First 1000. After that you will need to find a lucky buddy to start testing with. Verosee is a startup. They would like to get some early customers for their value added / premium services. If you are a business and testing, take out a short term license for everything and help them along. Nothing can make a smart bunch of developers take your more seriously than a couple of bucks. The price card is also something I’ve discussed with them. So feedback here or directly to the blog will be helpful. I believe their basic annual pricing is very reasonable at $29/ year with a demo option.

I'm looking forward to Skype's response. I don’t think Skype even knows they are about to enter the Groove space. Then Verosee is such a pretty integration and so well thought out you'd almost think that Skype's own UI designer had a hand in it (he's from Argentina too). While they have developed their own UI, it borrows from many of Skype’s best. Skype effectively runs in the background when Verosee is running.

Are there downsides? It’s a large file and does use some processing power. Although when inactive it appears to reside effectively in the background. After testing it for a week, I’ve found it stable. That’s not to say it will be without bugs. I’ve seen many Skype related plug-ins over the last year. This is definitely one of the most professional. It also reaffirms my belief in developers continuing to develop with and for Skype. Still, developers have learned. This proof of concept could just as easily be working with Google Talk if Google got on and released an API.

Is this VAPORware because the "signup" link/download link sends email saying it wont be available for "days/weeks".... However, it is a nice glowing review Stuart.

Being in a continuous need for desktop sharing and collaborative workspaces for small teams, I was very curious to go and try Verosee.

We tried LiveMeeting & Breeze in the past, but really wanted something that integrates well with Skype.

So here comes Verosee. Vamos Argentina :)

Btw, I'll prefer to test in on a desktop, as the Java loading is quite heavy for a already stuffed laptop. The installation also takes too long.

Hello Skype-fans. We beseeched you all (quite politely, I might add) to please not use free mail. We are working day and night to send out the links to you all -- even the Irish Spaniels are lending a paw.

I've tried Verosee, my opinion is it requires ALOT of work to be considered even a BETA product. I'll also add that it appears they are CHARGING for the beta as the "free" does not seem to be working.

The comments here seems inconsistent. After "Googling" each of the respondents, it seems that Mr. Elder does not one reference. This leads me to believe that he has no domain expertise whatsoever -- perhaps some of us prospective Beta Testers feel somewhat "insecure?"

The product is currently in BETA and is in such a poor state that the program can't even start! (They should call it a pre-alpha version instead)

Don't waste your time downloading and installing the ~100MB program! At least, wait some time till they get ready with a new version.

Finally got Verosee up and running last night. Seems to be very early days for this product, it has some Groove-like features like chat and file sharing but not much else available now. Really useful services like screen sharing and offline access are extra-cost addins (quite expensive too) and aren't available yet.

The install is very bloated, because Verosee is loading down a complete Java runtime environment. This doesn't make sense since you need to have Java installed to begin with before installing Verosee in order to use "Web Start".

An embarassing glitch in the copy I loaded last night is that whenever you invite someone to a workspace, it prefixes "I love you" to the invitation! Reminds me of the "I love you" virus from 2001.

Bill thanks for your comments. I agree that the install feels bloated. The understanding I had was that the complete envirnoment is required so Verosee can go cross platform. Something for example that Groove doesn't do.

I think your comments on pricing will be most useful to the Verosee team.

I also know it still needs work. It remains worth looking at.

I love this idea "Verosee", applaud the efforts, and look forward to stability and reasonable pricing. The application is on my productivity machine and I have not deleted it. This means I will be watching and participating. I will retract for my comment regarding charging for the free version, however, must rephrase and state that it was not obvious how to go about using the free version. After more playing more, a simple double-click (unintuitive in a web application) and things became more apparent.

Beta = welcome the critiques they are intended to help. It also means know very well the users have never touched the product and will have some raw (read unrefined) experiences.

I will agree with Mr. Wood, it was very embarrassing to invite some of my colleagues and see emails go out with “I love you" as the opening line.

I dont need reference to be real Mr. Bentley, so please keep personal jibes to one self. You do not know who I am therefore have not earned the right to make comment.

Cheers,

Yea, I didn't like the whole "I love you" opening line.... got some gay jokes at work. Can't have insubordination!!! Darn it all!

Why I (tried to) uninstall Verosee. Beware !! Verosee not only tries to spam your contact list but it is almost impossible to uninstall. After 3 attempts and 2 restarts I still cannot get rid of this pest. It uses its own uninstaller which hangs. It will not uninstall if you are not online. I still have hours in front of me to waste in trying to get this thing off my machine.

It's new version Monday, and today's goodies are: DesktopSharing now available, group purchasing enabled, and multiplePCs functional...and yes, a new uninstaller.

Thank you for your feedback, it keeps making Verosee better. Next week, a nice treat with a big reduction of download size.

Posted by: Jim Asiano Verosee at December 19, 2005 12:26 PM

New Version Monday! The download has been reduced to less than 20 MB -- so now you have no excuse to try our incredible product.
Also, the install no longer hangs and if you want to try the premium services, please let me know at Skype: jasiano and we can discuss the details...

Posted by: Pablo Bertorello at December 19, 2005 7:05 PM

Your feedback made it a priority for us: the Verosee download is now 80% smaller. Thank you.

I downloaded it and it didn't work when I installed it. A waste of time if it won't even startup, what's the point..
