VoipBuster Betters SkypeOut Rates

Topics: Competitors

Skype just lost a portion of my family SkypeOut business to a product still in beta. VoipBuster enables you to dial most of the SkypeOut global calling countries for "FREE" after you have opened an account and paid one Euro. Otherwise you are limited to calls of one minute. That's it $1.27 and you can call the UK, Canada, Australia and thoughout the US for free from your computer. Many other rates are similar to SkypeOut rates. So how long will this last? Are they buying the business? What should the rate really be? Questions I don't know the answer to. However, "FREE" local calls in the US is what this provides me. If this is forever then my landline could go. With SkypeIn and VoipBuster combined users can become even more aggressive on their communication strategies. Is this another sign of rates accelerating to zero?

VoipBuster is another small phone client that you download to your PC. It's not particularly flashy. After you enter a contact you can just click and dial their PSTN number. All numbers are in the international format. +CCareanumber. Apparently there is no PC to PC calling capability. Thus all calls are routed back through the PSTN. It works just like you would expect it to work. Audio and general quality is fine. I tried it on a broadband line. So what we have is a dialer, no chat functionality, no conference calling, no presence infomation, no mute button. So this is stripped down. Just like the old telephone. Plus, like Skype, when you call a PSTN number there is no caller ID sent. Where's this product going? I don't know; I sent some questions to VoipBuster support.

I suspect that VoipBuster hasn't yet declared their rates or their hand. The company behind VoipBuster is Swiss, Finarea SA, and they have many budget Voip plays going. Don't be surprised if the number of new beta accounts is limited. I suspect that VoipBuster hasn't yet declared their rates or their hand.

VoipBuster also needs an API, for then I could manage it with an Actiontec or similar USB device. That would bring this free international dialing quickly to my PSTN handset. In fact all these VoIP startups are going to start copying the SkypeAPI for as hardware rolls out it provides consumer lock-in. Consumers will pay $125 or so for a Wi-Fi phone or a DualPhone however they aren't going to pay that for a service they have never heard of. We are all more likely to buy hardware when we know it will work with multiple providers.

For now VoipBusters is an even cheaper way to call. Overall, my take is VoipBuster is still a long way behind Skype in functionality. However they are showing a new way to get into the game. For just 1 Euro you get all this free calling. It's a low risk purchase.

Actually, Finarea does not have that many VoIP deals going, but quite a number or regular call-by-call deals in a number of European countries. They work on two different billing models: one uses shared-revenue numbers, so you're billed through your regular phone company, and the other involves registration with a credit card, where they then charge approx. 5-7cents per call plus a time-based charge. The time based charge tends to be 0 or 1 cent for the US and many other countries, and correspondingly higher to countries where telecom is not as competitive and thus more expensive.

I suspect that VoIPbuster will eventually adopt that second billing/charging model, perhaps with a lower per-call charge than for their PSTN services.

Paul thanks for the insight. The part that bothers me is the model of buying users with free calls. When the rates come in they may migrate just as fast. This could become an expensive way to test.

This is Bill McCready from PCPhoneline.com and I saw the statement in your article "We are all more likely to buy hardware when we know it will work with multiple providers".

I just wanted to confirm that the latest Multi-Provider version of our VTA1000 Gateway concurrently supports Skype+SIP+IAX2 and also supports incoming caller id delivery.

You may use the VTA1000 Gateway with Skype PLUS any 20 other SIP and IAX2 based VoIP providers of your choosing including VoIPBuster all at the same time. When placing an outgoing call you may optionally select any one of your alternate VoIP providers to use by dialing a short 2 digit prefix before the number. When an incoming call arrives from any of the networks your phone will ring and all you need to do is answer it.

The VTA1000 Gateway can be used with any good cordless or regular phone or it connected to the trunk side of a PBX. The callerid is displayed on your phone handset for incoming Skype calls and it is designed to work even if the computer screen is powered off so there is no real reason to be near your computer to place and receive calls.

You can find the VTA1000 Gateway on Ebay or at http://www.pcphoneline.com

Best regards...Bill

Hi Stuart,
you forgot to say that voipbuster supports the protocol SIP and IAX, for that reason you can use an ATA (like Linksys PAP2-NA) in this way you can make your calls without the PC.

Regards,

VoceSuIP, Thanks for the heads up. I had seen it commented that it is possible. However, the instruction set seems a little lacking. For most this is still "complex" and consumers are only just starting to know what linksys "blackboxes" are. They remain strange etc.

Now the number of countries with free calls has been reduced to 21 countres... The following have been moved to the paid rates: China, Italy, Poland, Taiwan

Hi all not true add a few lines of code to your asterisk server and whole your company uses it without knowing they do. Super stuff ...
Changed my sip.conf and iaax.conf and exensions.conf in my asterisk server job done. All calls go out via them.

Canada has been moved out of the free list, as well.

I have many serius problems with my account!!!!!

Posted by: Martina at September 15, 2005 3:22 PM

I feel like I have been conned!! :-(
The only reason I registered with Voipbuster was because it had Canada as one of the free phone call destinations...and now they have removed it :-(

Posted by: Piers Donnelly at October 3, 2005 2:56 AM

voipbuster has the following sister domains, and some offer free calls to destinations that others dont. All have same interface, you will need to register with each product. http://www.netappel.fr and www.voipcheap.co.uk

I signed up to voipbuster and tried it on my laptop for a while for both international and UK only calls using just headphones and the laptop's own mic. Everything worked great, so...

I bought a Thomson speedtouch 716g for about UKP80 delivered. This is an ADSL modem, wireless router, firewall and VoIP box. You can plug your std PSTN phone (I use a philips dect 515 quad set) straight into the box. The box plugs into both the PSTN and DSL ports of your microfilter.

I set it up in about 5 or 10 minutes and I now have VoIP from any of my cordless phones in the house.

You can switch from VoIP to PSTN by picking the phone up and dialling a short code (which you can choose and set through the web based user interface). VoIP is the default and you need to use the code to switch to PSTN. Next call you make (assuming you have hung up) the box defaults back to VoIP.

I took the time to program my handsets (they have a shared address book) with the prefix for PSTN switching and then a pause before the number for all calls to UK mobile phones as voipbuster bill by the minute.

All other UK calls are free, and the international rates are very competitive.

Sound quality, to me, is better than the PSTN connection this replaces.

All in all I love it - and if voipbuster ever closes down I just need to browse into the box and update the server settings to my new choice of provider.

If voipbuster is down for technical reasons then the box defaults back to PSTN.

True, CLI is not supported, but for free calls I can put up with that!

Only downside that I have found so far is that the box does not automatically recognise emergency (999 or 112) numbers, but I believe the new (v5) version does.

Best thing is the PC does not need to be on for me to be able to benefit from VoIP. Oh - nearly forgot to mention - the Thomson box also supports Quality of Service for voice packets.

PS - The voipbuster program does support PC to PC calling too - if the other person also has voipbuster you can add them as a contact and call them by right clicking on their name and selecting the option you want.

The future is here (and it works!).

Cheers,

Calum

I just tried voipbuster again after some weeks. Now I have the problem that the connection doesn't work. 'The network is busy'... very, very strange!

In the URl above you'll find a nice comparison of outbound-rates of certain webphones (Skype, Gizmo, Jajah, ...). It's interesting.

Well, in my view VOIP Buster is a very good softfone like skype, but at the moment there are certain advantages, like FREE calling as mentioned and also works much better when calling on cell phones. In view of this skype s..ks. However i experienced delays sometimes 2 days ago to be exactly and could'nt talk more than 2mins with the huge 15secs delay and had to call with a normal PSTN phone. What i think is it looks that voipbuster is trying to buy the market with the free calls facility, proof of this is that some countries are removed from the list of free calls and now have been reduced to 16 from 21!And all the rest that are still available are for testing, someday i believe that there will be no Free countries anymore once voipbuster accuire thousands of subscribers... Particular country i used to call frequently was Australia...its a pity that its removed from the list...voipbuster still got more to improve and features to be added. I wish that my country call rate (Malta) will be reduced at a lower rate.

I use voipbuster (mate) with the "Tiptel cyberbox 100" and a dect phone. When I dial a number with my dect phone, voipbuster or voipbuster mate, enables the mute from the volume and the wave, so I cannot hear the other party. Doe someone know this problem, or has an idea how to solve it.
Thanx

Posted by: MrJ at March 5, 2006 10:53 AM

To avoid the auto mute issue with voipbustermate, use version 1.0.0.5 (http://members.home.nl/jayman/VoipBusterMate1.0.0.5.zip) of voipbustermate instead of 1.0.0.6.

This could lead to a new problem: the volume of the mic is set to 0 ((USB audio device -> Recording -> Wave in). When this happens, just set the wave in volume less high so it won't be turned down automatically when there is loud sound to process.

Good luck.

Betamax and Finarea are known for ther infamous business strategies: they start the service with a lot of free countries, then reduce the list, then cancell free calls altogether. If you complain, they freeze your account, and you can say goodbye to your money, cause they NEVER unswer and there is no way to contact them, only via a webform on their sites. After they rob their customers, they move to another brandname and lure customers into it with "free" calls. So be smart, use them for free or low-cost calls while it lasts, do not load the account with more than a minimum (i believe it is 10 euros). And don't expect any support.
