Posts linking to Skype on my Linksys Router?:
» Skype on my Linksys Router? from A Consumer Reports...
This consumer reports on the idea of running a VoIP phone without a computer, communicating with the Internet via router instead. While routers have many of the resources necessary to provide VoIP, they don't have all the resources necessary. But... [Read More]

That would be a stellar Linksys hack...

This would be awesome if true. All I need is an 802.11 b handset. I really think 2005 is the year of Skype.

Skype compiled for the linksys WRT54G accessible from anywhere on the web via SSH. Hmmm. Now you're talking. If Skype was released as source code we could do that now. Oh, right. Maybe not.
But what about audio? Remote audio via SSH? Hmmm. The correct place for Skype is on whatever client device you're touching, not on some remote server.

With LinkSys providing the firmware's for their routers with open source licensing, many people have already begun to hack them up and add their own applications etc to the custom linux kernel (lots of info available at: http://www.linksysinfo.org/)
With the specification's it's a possability, but the lack of a kernel supporting audio drivers, and audio input and output, also the lack of a GUI server, it would be quite hard to get Skype running (correctly) on a current router. Definitely something that should be considered by Linksys in the future though :)

There is currently the WRT54GP2A which has 2 integrated phone ports for the Vonage service. And they have already hacked the WRT54G with all sorts of wonderful addons, like xlink kai for the xbox to play multiplayer over the internet without a pc. So I am sure it is only a matter of time until someone hacks the WRT54GP2A so skype works as well!(Wow can't wait).

Man,
I intend to buy a wireless 802.11g router in the near future and have two concerns: 1) Wimax interoperability and 2) A Wifi Skype's cordless phone which connects directly to the router, not to the computer.
