How will this help Skype spread? Do you think it will be more valuable in some places in the world than others? Is a 2% to 10% cost-of-sales a little or a lot? Are these commission rates comparable to Amazon's? Are commissions renewed when a referred customer renews?

why are they doing this?
Because there in trouble. Financially.

Hey Craig!
Thanks for joining in.
Interesting comment, but I do not believe Skype is in financial trouble. No one knows of course, but if they have 2 million SkypeOut users at say $50 per user per year... well you can do the math.

I think it is because there are a lot of organisations demanding revenue sharing and this is a small step that may placate some of them in the short term.
If Skype doesn't share some of the revenue then those businesses will go elsewhere (e.g. Teleo or something even worse)
The scale of the commissions shows that Skype isn't overly worried, but they want to continue the momentum.
Any group with a user base can now get commission for signing them up to Skype. What is equally important is that they can then contact their userbase directly and free. To me, this is highly disruptive in terms of the marketing and customer care relationship. To take an extreme example, back in the nineties, companies were formed as lifestyle assistants, where for a fairly hefty fee, they would effectively operate as your PA. Not many were successful, but a combination of factors in the market now makes it an idea whose time has come (imho). Perhaps opportunistically rather than long term (e.g. buying a new car)
Incidentally, I also view the 'free talk' phenomenon exemplified by Skype as accelerating the English language hegemony that is becoming apparent in business today. Any views on that?

Hey Paul!
Good insight and comments.
As for "free talk" and English yes that is certainly a phenomenon! I get thanked almost everyday for allowing individuals to exercise there English. Hegemony is not a term I would use, but I do understand that some people would.
Thanks for adding to our conversation.

This is a great program to start with. I dont see anything wrong. Most of the big companies are planning to grow their networs by offering Affiliate Programs. For instance Google's Adsense Program etc.
