Do you Skype? What's that mean? Once or twice, or is it a tool that you can't live without? Once you have Skyped.... How long does it take you to really get it? To adopt it and change your work practices? Does it remain a tool for you or has it become your new language of communications? What it the impact of "presence" on your calling patterns? Are you talking more or less? How do you feel about time on Skype?
So, I smiled twice today when I saw Richard's post as he commented that too many in Telecom really don't know the enemy for they don't use Skype. It is certainly consistent with my experience. While we can run a rapid immersion, some elements can't be thought about deeply until you get there. At Von I remember one introduction where the speaker asked for a show of hands for: "How many have tried Skype?". I remember 50-60% of the audience raising their hands. Now this is only a VoIP conference. Apparently even there, 40% or more haven't spent the time to look. However go beyond the VON audience and I'm sure the penetration and knowledge is even worse. Everyone from Microsoft to Plaxo needs a strategy for Skype.
I've had some calls from journalists recently. Many are writing about Skype and still to use it. I'm thinking about refusing further calls unless they are on Skype. Then there is some value in becoming more specific with people on the "Have you tried Skype question?" context test.
When did you first try Skype?
On what did you use it and where?
What was the reason for first trying it?
Is your Skype profile "blank" or "detailed"?
How do you listen and talk on Skype? Headset, Handset, Speakers etc.?
Have you used it continuously or off and on?
How would you describe your usage, testing, frequent personal, business, other?
How many buddies do you have on your list? <5, <25, <75 or >125?
How would you describe your usage for the last week?
What percentage of your communication time is done via Skype? How does this compare with x months ago?
Has Skype had any impact on your email volumes? On your phone bills?
How many ad hoc conference calls have you been involved in? How frequently do you use this feature?
Do you use chat while talking on Skype?
What are you more likely to do? Start a conversation with a chat message, or ring?
What do you like best about Skype?
What would you change?
So if you are in charge of Skype strategy for your business your first job it to get using it. Push everyone in your network to use it. Go out of your way to use it. Get SkypeIn, use SkypeOut. Get your buddylist count up. Only then will you be prepared to begin commenting. And begin to comprehend the possibilities around this new language of communications.
