"Blind Access Journal is sending the following letter to Skype requesting that attention be paid to the accessibility of its software to all current and potential users, including those of us whom happen to be blind."
Are they aware there are other voip apps out there?
If skype has deaf ears (certainly no pun intended!), then they should send the letter to other companies. I ust bet there are some with their needs already in mind.

Yes we are aware that there are other voice apps out there. The fact is that skype is the most popular of them by far. Also, we don't want to be limited to just one voice chat program. From what I can gather, the reason the scripts keep breaking is that the scripters are having to get all of their information from the screen rather than from the application itself. I believe I saw a post on an email list from the person who maintains these scripts saying that the api could prove useful but that it often crashed on his system. I am totally blind myself and have just started using skype. I am also an information technology major. I would be willing to assist developers in any way I could to help make this happen. I know Darrell can sometimes come off as very demanding and that can turn some people off. Judging from the lack of comments I suspect this is what may have happened. I'm willing to look at the api, but I've never really done anything else before. I think there needs to be cooperation from skype developers and blind programmers (yes there are some) to make this happen. What kind of tools are necessary to use the api? I've never used one before and am only vaguely familiar with what one does. Can someone point me to some resources that may help? Are there people working on this already? Lets see if we can combine efforts...

Blind Access Journal writes an accessibility plea letter to Skype which was noticed by the developer team. I think the SkypeAPI could also be used to assist with product solutions where sight or hearing difficulties must be overcome. A number of "voice directory" and "voice dialing" solutions are close to ready. From Darrell's post and letter to Skype.
