Are you dreaming of a cordless Hi-Fi headset for use with your laptop and mobile phone? I certainly have been. So you can imagine my anticipation when I received the latest 4-in-1 Bluetooth MP3 Headphone from GATechnologies. They have some cool gear and their BT-205 headset was one of four I encountered at CES. It's been a wonderful learning experience trying out this headset. I'm also going to say up front that I'm not quite ready to buy one. They are not cheap, expect to layout $200+ for any that are close to release.
This iZon headphone has built in a 128mb SD card for the MP-3 player, a FM tuner, and BT Hi-Fi audio streaming and BT mobile headset functions. Naturally, charger, travel bag and USB cables are included. It is presented on the packaging as a 4 in 1, 1 for ALL presentation.
I should have known that four into one may mean some compromises. Others may still love this device. Still it won't be cheap, retailing around $219.
That's where my initial expectations were crushed. For what I wanted was to listen to my iTunes via Bluetooth audio streaming and switch when required answer inbound Skype calls with Mitunes switching going on. Even better if I could set the phone up with a BT answer switch. From my perspective these two features are where the money and the deliverables have to be in this headset. Unfortunately, I couldn't pair my laptop with the headset in Hi-Fi mode (I suspect I need another dongle or the device they show for some that goes in the audio out jack). However I suspect that even with that second dongle I couldn't switch quickly from the streaming mode to headset mode and they won't run concurrently.
Thus this device faces the classic multi-purpose dilemma. It does many things, as an MP-3 player it was adequate with good although not excellent sound. As a 40gb iPod user 128mb that doesn't synch with iTunes is less appealing. While I generally love the back behind the head type of headset this one was actually a little small for me. (Ok I do have a big head - it is a one size design). The FM radio works. So as a sports or jogging device it would suit that purpose. When it came to the PC the BT connection required me to "connect" headset each time I wanted to use it with the laptop. While I could set it up to point to Skype and take calls I found the mic was inadequate, picking up either too much background noise or simply leaving me sounding too far away and quiet. I was able to make instant comparisons with my Motorola HS810 which provides a very clear sound to anyone I'm talking to. Thus while the Headset function could be connected, in that mode I could only listen in "mono" to iTunes. The music simply doesn't work for me in that mode. So I found myself taking it off and that defeats the purpose.
I tried to pair it with my Nokia 3650. In principle it should work and does according to the instructions although not the box. For this phone I don't think it rang in the earpiece and so I really needed to change my bluetooth sound profile. Answering the phone requires me to answer on the mobile. I never really mastered the buttons while it was still on my head.
So it's a tough world when you go looking for a produt that needs to do more than your iPod, desktop speakers, and mobile BT headset. My trial left me much happier with the small BT headset I've been using with Skype. Now I may want an even smaller BT headset. I'll keep looking for that audio streaming integration; waiting to see it working effectively. Perhaps there are technical reasons why. My guess is it will just be another six months or so. By then this headset will have seen some upgrades and it may well be worth revisiting.
