Skype Journal: Ten-way Skype Conference Calling in 2.0

February 8, 2006 07:46 AM

A joint announcement by Skype and Intel.

Ten-way conference calling is nice. The limit of 5 was imposed by Skype because after 4 people were added to a conference you would run out of CPU cycles. So it is no surprise that as new technology emerges Skype would remove this limit.

So if you have Skype version 2.0 and an Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor you can start hosting conferences of up to ten participants today. (If you don't have Skype 2.0 you should get it now whether you have a dual core processor or not. A new version 2.0.0.81 was released today!)

I really doubt Skype will not allow AMD users (like me) not to use this 10-way conferencing feature. Surely we AMD users can set this feature in the config.xml file. If we can't I will lead the revolution. If we can't; I hope you will join the revolution regardless of your processor of choice.

Update Thursday Feb 8: The revolution is starting here...

Um...I did 5-way calling (along with my 5 pals) and none of us were even close to 'running' out of CPU cycles when we got to 5 simultaneous calls. Do you have any information to backup this claim and substantiate why an Intel Duo Core is actually necessary?

Dual core processor addresses the processing load. What about bandwidth requirement? Does it increase because of the added legs?

I've been hosting 5 people conference on my old Athlon XP 1800+ and I haven't noticed any CPU problems...

I think, that it's just a marketing campaign - CPUs from AMD are performacing equally good (if not better) in any multimedia tasks.

If bigger conferences won't be allowed on non Intel CPUs than you can count on my support during The Revolution!
