Skype Journal: Major Skype Irritation Solved

June 3, 2005 03:45 PM

No, no one got fired today at Skype. (Do you want my list?) This is better than that. And no, this is not a new feature in 1.3.0.29.
It is most annoying to be typing in Word or into a Chat Message while a call comes in and have the focus switched to the Skype Application and have the letters end up in the “Skype Address Bar” and force the call to be answered. I know this drives Stuart nuts.

The solution is embarrassingly simple.
Go to Skype>View and de-select the View Address Bar.
Go figure!

Well, this is a simple, cheap and fantastic trick! I also sweared a lot of times! I immediately switched off theaddress bar! thanks!

Very soon I hope to make SkypeTweaker available. This free product will allow you to set hidden settings of Skype (like the one mentioned in this article) and many many others.

Ummm, this is giving aspirin to someone with a stab wound.

1. Skype shouldn't be pulling focus away without consent. That is a UE defect. Proper behavior is to wave from the edges asking for attention.

2. You shouldn't have to go into the menus to turn off the address bar. The bar should have a switch built in.

3. Don't tell people to turn off the search bar. A surprising number of people use it as a shortcut to dialing or looking people up in their address book. Fix the core problem of overbearing focus grabbing.

The Skype Window still pops up whenever someone calls though. It is still very annoying. The issue is still not solved.

Glad I'm not the only one who hates the "focus grabbing" that Skype does? So why don't they fix this? I've seen quite a few complaints now.

Hmmm, could it just be that (50.000.000 users) / (quite a few who complain) = (millions don't seem to be concerned)? I do find it rather annoying too.
