Skype Journal: SkypeIn UK numbers

March 17, 2005 09:09 AM

Trying to get a UK Skype number. SkypeIn is currently sold out. Numbers are still available for the US, Hong Kong and France. the real hurdle is getting a number that "fits" with your traditional local calling area. Number availability will determine the success and penetration of SkypeIn.

I took an area code 415 number, however that's a long distance call from my home line. It would be covered under the x minute long distance plan, roughly looking at SBC rates calling 415 from home is a similar price to calling home using SkypeOut. So until a 925 number is available, a SkypeIn line for the home is impossible. I can't put a long distance cost burden on my daughters friends....

I'd be happy to retain and transfer my current home number to a SkypeIn number, however I don't want a service outage while I do it. Someone will tell me I need to be worried about 911, I guess I'm not. I see lower bills and better functionality coming my way. I've had no problems so far with SkypeIn.

Lastly the one function I'm going to miss on Vonage, when it goes at the end of the month (replaced by SkypeIn) will be the call forwarding feature which currently costs nothing to forward my calls to my mobile. Voice mail is thus centralized. I know in some other countries rates may not encourage this.

It would appear that there are now some more Skype UK numbers available.

I just signed up for a 3 month plan and got a 0208 816 80xx number (C&W provided).

Unfortunately, calls to it are terminated in a 'dialtone' - It does not work!
