Skype Journal: Stuart's Doom Message
March 11, 2005 01:32 AMThese are my VON notes from one of the bluntest session on the death of traditional telephony. Ok it's not my message it could have been. Stuart Alsop is a VC with New Enterprise Associates, and (interesting to me) has "money" in Vonage. I didn't feel the audience squirming in their seats, or really know it the message was ignored. These were some pithy little quotes:
"talking about tranforming the telephone" "change telephones and you change everyone and everything" "VoIP could be the biggest change yet. death to the PUC, FCC, 911, universal access etc. VoIP leads to the complete deconstruction ot the telecoms industry"
"wireline telephone companies are toast" "suggest retraining and going into the job market" 'I've declared freedom from the telephone company."
My takeaway, he sees no future for the wireline companies, there's a little room for new wireless opportunities. Thankfully he doesn't believe voice is a commodity. That's the dangerous thinking that's put telecoms in such a pickle. Making calls, talking with others is a really important part of our lives. The value proposition is in making the experience better. It's about time that the telecom industry "got this message". The probing and trialing will soon become a stampede. There are more products everyday.
In summary while I understood the rant, I didn't understand why Vonage is such a good investment.

I think stuart's view of vonage must be that it is transformational and it has a revenue stream attached to it. building a customer base of 1million plus coupled with the innovation means that there is something interesting for a CLEC or cable company in 12-18 mths when NEA wants to exit.
whatever one things vonage has commercialized VOIP and has made traditional telcos wake up.
