Skype Journal: Contact List Solution
March 11, 2005 02:36 PMSkype's Beta 1.2 for Windows just solved your Contact List problems. The change will follow in Mac and Linux versions in time.
Skype's been listening and makes a most welcome improvements in the 1.2 beta for Windows. Top of many people's wishlists is "contacts". Now everytime you log onto Skype you can retrieve your contacts from wherever you are. No more worries about losing them, no more hidden files to copy.
You can download the beta now or wait for it to be formally announced.

The contact importer doesn't work with Outlook if you have LookOut installed. I had a chat with Skype support on this yesterday and I can only hope they get it fixed soon.

Any idea on where the contact list is stored? Is it stored in multiple supernodes? If so, is there a theoretical possibility that when you log on you need to have to wait a long time searching for it or may not be able to retrieve the contact list at all?

Hey Aswath!
That's an interesting question. Your contacts are stored in a file config.xml located C:\Documents and Settings\My Computer User Name\Application Data\Skype\myskypeusername.
Of course now this same list appears to be mirrored on a central server (it may not be, but the feature is labled as "CentralStorage" in the config.xml file).
The few times I have tested this feature my contacts (166 of them :) ) appeared (complete) within a few seconds.
Skype have not issued any comments that I am aware of on this feature. It was simply listed in the Release Notes. It is now in the Knowledgebase http://support.skype.com/index.php
I found this featue by accident (stupidity might be better. I left on a road trip with my contacts stored on a USB JumpDrive which wouldn't play on my laptop. Bingo... all my contacts showed up. :) :)
Good Skyping...
Regards, Bill

this new feature is great. I had skype on 2 different computers and it merged the two contact lists (that were different) after i logged into new version. The outlook import feature does not seem to work though
