Skype Journal: Reporters Using Skype

February 6, 2005 08:55 AM

The BBC is using Skype for professional interviews when all else fails.

I'm the Senior Engineer/Technical Director for the BBC World Service Bureau in Boston MA USA. We (the BBC) have reporters and producers all over the world, and maintaining cost-efficient contact with them is a matter of great priority. Skype is proving to be a big help in that regard, but that's not the news I wanted to share.

About three weeks ago we were trying to do an interview with a reporter in Baghdad but were unable to establish a connection via our usual comms links (BBC VPN, NERA satphone, landline, mobile. . .). So I had him initiate a SkypeOut call to us, and it worked really well. The sound got a little watery after it hit our local PBX, but it was usable -- and we aired it! To 180 public radio stations in the US, and almost 2.5 milliion listeners nationwide! VERY COOL! Skype Forum
